Detailed programme

Day 1:

Arrival in Kuhmo

Arrive in Kuhmo and settle into the pleasant Hotel Kalevala, where the restaurant serves delicious local dishes.

In the evening, take a sunset trip to Harakkasaari, a small and unusual island right next to the hotel. You can reach it by wading through shallow water – or rent a canoe from Hotel Kalevala and paddle there. Harakkasaari is a perfect spot for photographing the nightless night as the sun slowly sets behind the hills.

Day 2:

Canoeing in Lentua

After breakfast, head to Lake Lentua, one of the most beautiful canoeing destinations in Kainuu. Rent a canoe or join a guided paddling tour – the famous wild forest reindeer of Kuhmo spend their summers on Lentua’s sandy shores, and with a bit of luck you may spot them!

Day 3:

From Birdwatching to Bear Kingdom

Start your day early with a birdwatching trip to the Kämärä birdwatching tower or to Lentuankoski rapids – both are excellent locations for photographers.

Afterwards, continue north toward Suomussalmi. Along the way, notice how the nature gradually changes as you cross into the reindeer herding area. If you wish to meet and photograph reindeer from close range, visit the Korpiporo Reindeer Farm.

In the evening, head northeast for your first night in a bear photography hide. Choose between Martinselkonen Wilderness Centre or Arola Farm & Wilderness Holidays – both offer the chance to see and photograph bears in their natural habitat.

Day 4:

Landscapes of Hossa National Park

After a night with the bears, continue toward Hossa National Park, known for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic ridge formations. One of the highlights is Julma-Ölkky, Finland’s largest canyon lake. Its steep cliffs offer breathtaking views toward the deep blue water below – a favourite location for photographers.

Day 5

A Day Trip in Peaceful Hossa

Spend a full day exploring Hossa National Park. We especially recommend:

  • Rock painting Trail: leading to ancient rock paintings thousands of years old.
  • Muikkupuro Lean-to: perhaps Finland’s most beautiful picnic site, beside a winding stream – an ideal spot for photography and a break in nature.

In the evening, return to your cabin and enjoy a peaceful summer night. If you wish to extend your adventure, you can book an additional bear photography night with Hossa Bear– a perfect finale to a nature photographer’s holiday.
