On the side of the E-5 highway, some 30 kilometres from Suomussalmi towards Kuusamo, a startling army of strawheads – The Silent People- stops the travellers in their tracks. The peat heads created by dance artist Reijo Kela were first put up in 1988 on Lassila field for Ilmarin kynnös – performance. The Silent People was put up in its current location in the autumn of 1994. In the summertime there is a Niittykahvila Café, where you can have campfire coffee and delcious pancakes. Some local salty snacks are available. Also lunch in very cosy Meadow Cottage is something that your group will be thrilled! Open other times by prior arrangement!
