Set off on an unforgettable self-guided electric car adventure through the spectacular nature and culture of Arctic Lakeland and Koillismaa! This route leads you from Oulu to the summit landscapes of Kivesvaara Hill, into the deep silence of Martinselkonen, and onward to the clear waters and ridges of Hossa National Park. Along the way, you’ll find charging points, high-quality accommodation, and unique local experiences. Choose your favourite stops — or enjoy the entire journey from start to finish!

Detailed programme

Day 1:

PALTAMO – Arctic Giant & Kivesvaara

Your electric adventure begins in Oulu and takes you straight to the top of Kivesvaara hill, home to Arctic Giant. Here, dramatic hilltop nature meets unique accommodation and delicious local cuisine.

Stay in the extraordinary “birdhouse hotel,” built high above the ground, and admire panoramic views right from your bed.

Things to do:

  • Hike the scenic trails around Kivesvaara
  • Rent a fatbike or kayak and explore Lake Kivesjärvi
  • Enjoy a locally inspired dinner at Makuhelmi restaurant

Day 2:

PUOLANKA – Hepoköngäs ja Ukkohalla

Head next to Hepoköngäs, one of Finland’s highest natural waterfalls. It’s easily accessible along a short trail and offers stunning photo opportunities.

You can also stop at Ukkohalla, where a charging station is available.

 


SUOMUSSALMI – luontoa, taidetta ja historiaa

Suomussalmi offers several charging points and a great selection of activities. Stay in the cosy B&B Kuutamo Guesthouse or the Spa Hotel Kiannon Kuohut.

Day 3:

The Silent People & Martinselkonen

Continue along Highway 5 and stop at the famous land-art installation The Silent People. Don’t miss the legendary Finnish pancakes served at the nearby Niittykahvila café.

 

Next, drive to Martinselkonen Wilderness Centre, which offers both charging and accommodation. Here, you can join a bear-watching excursion or simply enjoy the peaceful forest surroundings.

Alternative accommodation options include Arola Farm and Matkalaisen Pirtti.

Day 4:

Day 4: Martinselkonen – Hossa

 

After breakfast, it’s time to leave the deep forests of Martinselkonen and continue to Hossa National Park, known for its esker ridges, crystal-clear lakes, and ancient rock paintings.

Things to do in Hossa:

  • Värikallio Route (8 km): hike to a cliff with 4,500-year-old rock paintings
  • Canoe on the crystal clear lakes (equipment available at the visitor centre)
  • Lunch at the Visitor Centre or a campfire meal at a designated fireplace

 

Hossa offers a lot of different accommodation options. See for example the lakeside chalets at Hossan Lumo. Their cottages are available around the year, in the summer they have also a cafe and minimarket.

 

Day 5:

Return Home

It’s time to say farewell to the stunning Wild Taiga region. Drive back to Oulu — or, if you prefer, end your journey in Kuusamo.

This route can easily be extended — take your time and stay longer at your favourite stops!
