We will learn the basics of canoeing on our first day, within sight of Hotel Kalevala, on the waters of Lake Lammasjärvi. Start is from the hotel shore. We will make a trip to Harakkasaari island for coffee by an open fire and snacks. Duration of paddling is 4-5 hours. Full board (breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner).
Day 3 Tuesday
PADDLING TRIP TO BEAVERS SETT AND BEAVER-SPOTTING BOOTH
This trip starts at noon and is paddled in tandem open canoes on a small wilderness lake and on a small stream. The target is the gigantic beavers lodge. We will also view the dams the beaver has built and his feeding trails. Paddling here is every time an adventure – beaver is very active in building the dams and renovating the old ones. Sometimes we have to come away from the canoes and climb over the dams. The beaver is usually out in the evening and at night but sometimes you can see him also during the day. We may hear him warning the other beavers of intruders by splashing the water with his strong tail. We will stop to make us lunch and coffee by the fire (weather permitting fires). Transfer back to Kuhmo for early dinner. Then we go by car to the beaver-spotting booth. We will spend 3-4 hours in the booth, during this time we will have a fair chance of seeing the beaver feed. When it gets dark we leave the booth and drive back to the hotel. Full board.
Day 4 Wednesday
ROW TO AN ISLAND FOR A NIGHT UNDER THE STARS
Start for an exciting adventure, we row a big wooden boat together on the nature reserve lake Lentua and make an over night tour. The night we stay in tents on an island. Lentua is famous for Finnish caribou (Rangifer tarandus fennicus, wild forest reindeer). These beautiful animals live in summer time on the sandy islands. We can study the tracks of caribous, the nature of the island and maybe we find some blueberries and mushrooms to cook. Cooking is done together, outdoors, by the fire. We can stay late in the evening by the fire and share stories. If the sky is clear Lentua is a good place to spot the stars and satellites.
Day 5 Thursday
ROWING AND VISITING LENTUANKOSKI RAPIDS
We make our breakfast again by the fire and start our rowing tour back to the shore. Big boat is safe to be on the lake even if it is windy and waves are high. We row around some islands and can see beautiful lake landscape on our way. Lunch we enjoy in the shore by the Lentuankoski rapids. Then we have a walk on the rapids shore, where we might meet some fishermen trying catch whitefish, brown trout or grayling. Then transfer to the hotel Kalevala. Sauna and dinner. Full board.
Day 6 Friday
HUSKYTREKKING
Hiking tour to a nature protection area with the eager huskies. This so called husky trekking is a good workout. Each one has an own friendly husky, a special belt and a shock-absorbing leash. Huskies are very eager to pull and your job is to follow and slow down on the tricky parts. Afterwards you will feel the hiking in your muscles – no need for a gym! Having the dogs with also helps us to see, smell and hear better what is out there in the nature. Lunch by the fire, some sausages for the dogs as well. Full board.
Day 7 Saturday
VISIT TO LARGE CARNIVORE CENTRE PETOLA AND NIGHT OF BEAR-SPOTTING
In the morning we will visit Large Carnivore Centre Petola, where the exhibition tells about the bear, the wolverine, the wolf and the lynx, all of which live in the Kuhmo region. Also the Finnish caribou (Rangifer tarandus fennicus) that makes the main feed for these large carnivores is introduced, as well as the largest bird of prey in the area, the golden eagle. Petola houses a wide range of information on Finlands large carnivores and nature. After the visit we drive to the bear-spotting base, enjoy an early dinner there, have some introduction to bear watching and then hike to the hides. During the night of bear-spotting (from 5 pm – 7 am) we will have a strong chance of seeing the bears and if we are lucky, also wolverine, fox or even wolf might visit the place. The large spotting booth can seat 9 people comfortably; it even has a dry-toilet and beds for taking naps in a sleeping bag. The booth also has camera openings for photographers.
Day 8 Sunday
LAST DAY TOGETHER, EVENING BY THE FIRE
