Programme description

The silent surrounding in middle of the rugged forest is a great place to gather strength and relax after the hectic work period. Tons of pure snow offers great opportunity for cycling and enjoying the beautiful winter landscape. We are cycling just next to the Eastern border of EU, seeing the signs telling how near we are to the Russia. In summer time these forests belong to the King of Forest – Bear, but in the winter they are in deep sleep.Cycling distance is from 7 to 24km per day. The tracks go in forest, swamps and ice covered lakes. At the forest we will have break by the open fire, where we can enjoy hot drinks and tasty meal. During the trips to the wilderness we can see many animal tracks in a snow. We can also try walking with snowshoes and ice fishing. In the evening we can relax in a heat of a sauna and don’t forget to look outside there might be northern lights dancing in the sky.

Daily program: 

Day 1: Arrival

Transfer from Kajaani airport to the Martinselkonen Centre. Dinner and accommodation. 

Day 2: Get to Know Your Bike and snowshoeing

After breakfast its time to get to know the bikes and equipment. The guide will make sure that everyone’s bike has right adjustment for the rider. We learn to use the bike gears and brakes and guide gives tips for safe cycling in a snow.

At first we will try the bikes on the road. Then its time to move off road. We will do a 7km route to practise. We will cycle the route to get the first touch on cycling on snow. The aim of the day is that everyone is comfortable with the bikes and cycling on snow.

In the evening snowshoe trip. 

Day 3: Teerilampi trail 17km

After breakfast its time to start our first longer cycling day. We will head to the Teerilampi circle trail that will take us to Martinselkonen Nature Reserve. We will cycle in the snow-white landscape just next to Russian border. We will enjoy outdoor lunch at Teerilampi wilderness hut.

Day 4:  Lake side trail 23 km

This day we will head to Lake trail. This trail goes around beautiful Öllöri-lake. One part of the trail is on ice. On they way we can see the Finland-Russia border poles. Outdoor lunch is enjoyed Särkkälampi wilderness hut.

Day 5:  Martinjoki trail 24km

After breakfast we will start another cycling day in Martinselkonen Nature protection area. The Martinjoki trail goes partly in the same route as the Teerilampi trail. Outdoor lunch is enjoyed Lintulampi wilderness hut.

Day 6: Departure

It’s time to say goodbye. After breakfast transfer to the airport by private car/coach.

Price: 1200€/person. 30% of the price is charged when you make the booking. The final invoice is sent to you 30 days before departure, if the booking is done less than 30 days before, the final payment will be payed at Martinselkonen when arriving. 

Detailed programme

Day 1. Airport transfers

Transfers that are included to the Fat Biking in the Bear Kingdom program are: Transfer from Kajaani airport to Martinselkonen from evening flight (17:35 if available). Return transfer day 7 from Martinselkonen to Kajaani airport to the day flight.

Exclusions

Flights are not included to the package price. 

Please book your own flights from Finnair.fi to Kajaani. Arriving to Kajaani on Sunday at 17:45 and departure from Kajaani on Friday at 12:10. 

Please book the flights before booking the Fat Biking tour.

Good to know

Cycling in a snow is harder than in hard surface, so participants need good basic fitness and previous experience of biking.
