Programme description

Have you ever dreamed of driving your own husky sled through a breathtaking winter wonderland? On this tour, you can enjoy the thrill of leading your own team of huskies through the silent, pristine, snowy landscapes of northeast Finland. You will learn about the daily life of the huskies and help look after them. The highlight of this trip is an overnight stay in a rustic, authentic wilderness cabin.

Detailed programme

Day 1. Arrival

Arrival at Kuusamo airport and a 1 hour 15-minute transfer to husky farm. Upon arrival at the farm you will meet your guide Miia, who runs the small husky farm with her family.  After check-in, dinner will be served, followed by a briefing about the upcoming programme. (For late arrivals, an evening snack will be provided, and the briefing will take place the following morning.)

Day 2. Husky farm and "warm up" safari

Start your adventure by visiting the husky kennels, where you'll meet your dogs. You’ll learn how to care for the husky teams, receive instructions on the equipment, and how to drive the sled. After lunch, you will harness the dogs, split into teams, and embark on an easy 10 km training trip. In the afternoon, you’ll have time to relax, spend more time with the dogs, and feed them. Husky sledding approx. 10 km.

Day 3. Off to the wilderness

Today, it's time for “the safari”! You will pack your belongings onto the sled and set off on an overnight journey into the wilderness. The route takes you through old forests, over frozen lakes and across swamps, where you can enjoy the beauty and complete silence of the snow-covered nature around you.

You’ll stop for a lunch cooked over an open fire. In the afternoon, you’ll reach a cosy wilderness cabin located by a small river. There is no electricity or running water, but the cabin is heated by a wood-burning stove. Dinner will be prepared together in a tepee and served by candlelight. To relax after a day outdoors, a sauna will be heated, and you can enjoy a soothing bath. Husky sledding approx. 25–35 km. 

Day 4. Return to the farm

The final stage of your adventure takes you back to the husky farm. Before heading back, you’ll enjoy another day of sledding, including one more picnic lunch by an open fire. Upon returning to the farm, you’ll thank the dogs, feed them, and take care of them one last time. Husky sledding approx. 25–35 km.

Day 5. Return

Breakfast and transfer to Kuusamo airport.

GROUP SIZE
To run a tour minimum two persons are required. Maximum group size is 6 persons.

HUSKY SLEDDING
*On husky safaris everybody drives their own dog team (3–6 dogs)
*No experience in dog sledding is necessary, but you should be reasonably fit, confident in your sense of balance, and able to cope with the cold and long hours outdoors. 
*For the overnight safari you can bring only a small backpack (max. 40 l) on the sledge. The rest of your luggage will be left at the base camp.  
*The minimum age is 15 years.

TRAVEL
Flights are not included in the tour price. If you have any questions regarding flights or transfers, please contact us before booking your flights!
  
Notes for arrival
The joining point for this trip is Kuusamo airport.
Single-timed group transfers from Kuusamo airport are organized to meet the following Finnair flights from Helsinki:
18.01. HEL-KAO AY497 (arrival at 21.20)
22.02. HEL-KAO AY491 (arrival at 19.25)
22.03. HEL-KAO AY491 (arrival at 19.25)

Notes for return
At the end of the tour, a scheduled group transfer is organized back to Kuusamo airport to connect with the following Finnair flights to Helsinki:
KAO-HEL AY486 at 10.50

Travel by bus/train
Upon arrival it is possible take a train (or bus) from Helsinki to Oulu, followed by a bus from Oulu to Kuusamo. The same applies for the return trip to Helsinki. Please ensure that the schedule aligns with the transfer times mentioned above.

PAYMENT
Deposit: 20 % of total amount will be charged at the time of booking.
Full payment: Due 14 days before the departure. The invoice for full payment will be sent by email.  

NOTES
It is essential that a passenger is covered by adequate travel insurance.
The tour is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility.
We reserve the right to change the itinerary due to weather or snow conditions.
