Programme description

Kuhmo in Eastern Finland is a paradise of music during the annual Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival. Music can be heard from early morning events till late evening concerts. But is not only the music that matters in Kuhmo. The combination of culture and pure nature makes Kuhmo special. The Austrian music magazine Die Festspiele has said that the strengths of the Festival are blue lakes, white nights, cosy atmosphere and unique music.

Kuhmo Chamber Music will be organised for the 53rd time on July 9 – 22, 2023. The Festival’s theme is to be ’Roots and wings’. That is a reference to the fact that Kuhmo next year will be the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture.

Kuhmo is commissioning three new works for 2023. The Festival has asked Outi Tarkiainen to write a piece for basset clarinet and string quartet. In collaboration with the Santa Fee Music Festival, Wigmore Hall and Elbphilharmonie the Festival has commissioned Charlotte Bray to write a string quartet. And a new chamber opera composed is to be produced in partnership with the Rauma Festivo Chamber Music Festival and Our Festival.

The festival will consist of over 100 events. There will be festival concerts, concerts of the students, art exhibitions, instrument presentations, meetings with the artists and composers. Altogether over 100 international artists will come and perform at the Festival. The programme and the artists will be published in January 2023.

Don’t miss Kuhmo – the world capital of chamber music!
